Touring Diary – Japan, March 2012

In amongst the chaos of being on the road in Japan recently I managed to roll the camera a little and give you a look behind the scenes of some of the Blue Note venues, the bullet train (shinkasen), and some live performance footage that is exclusive to Videobasslessons.tv.

Be sure to check out the follow up video to this that will be released soon… it deals with how to prioritize aspects of necessity when the schedule is tight between tours.

Communication – Practicing with another musician

Jamming with other musicians is something that’s been at the forefront of my musical development. And from time to time I get to hang out with close friends who are also incredible musicians and swap ideas. I was down in Texas with my good friend Justin Vasquez working on a project and we decided to shed a little at the house one day. I rolled tape so you get a look inside that process. We’re trading back and forth over a groove I have in the looper, and playing off each others phrasing and ideas.

Austin Studio Session Part 1

Here’s a little more ‘reality tv’ for you that my good friend Just Vasquez shot on his iPhone while I was tracking some bass ideas for a producer down in Austin TX. In this video (and more in part 2!) you get to see me really searching for ideas and trying out new sounds on this record date. I’m using a Moog Low Pass Filter, Moog CP-251, Boss OC-2, Xotic BB Pre amp (for distortion), Line 6 DL4, Boss Bass Chorus, and the TC Electronic Nova Repeater. I’m even using a pick on some of this stuff!

Learning music for a tour

This is a video I shot the night before going on the road with legendary trumpeter Randy Brecker. I go over some of the songs in the set and break down how I work on new material to prepare for a tour or a concert, including a look at some of the charts I’m reading. I also explain each of the sections on the tune as I’m working on them, and show you all the things I have difficulty with, and more importantly how I overcome those issues and internalize the music.

Recording Session from home – Part 2

Here’s part two of my “recording at home” videos, and in this one I’m actually tracking the song to logic and talking about what things are working and what aren’t, and how I’m going to fix them in the editing. Then I show you the finished edits and how it all slotted into the song. Basically these two videos look at my whole process from start to finish on a home recording session.

Recording Session From Home – Part 1

This is the first in a two part series of videos that looks inside my process for recording as a sideman from home. I am working on a pop/funk track for an artist in Slovakia, and this first video looks at how I learn a song, deal with a deadline, and at my home setup in terms of gear.

Pedal Board Part – 2

Part two of the in-depth pedal board set up videos, and in this video I show you the final routing for this particular setup, and how all the pedals work in sequence together. Plus a look at a couple of new pedals that had just arrived from TC Electronics the day before I shot this video.
