I remember hearing things on records and thinking to myself I’d a) maybe never be able to play it and b) had no real way of even starting to understand where a phrase was coming from rhythmically. One of the most common metric modulation type rhythmic phrases I came across (and finally cracked the code to understanding it!) was four note cells grouped in triplet phrases. It even sounds complicated to write or read about, but it’s actually pretty simple and incredibly effective.
