Tour Rehearsal Masterclass

Rehearsals are a fundamental element of any kind of career in music. We work hard on preparation for any live performance or recording and rehearsing is yet another tool we can continually work on getting better at. I’m so happy that I threw the camera up to capture a rehearsal with Peter Erskine’s band just before heading to Japan on tour. I’ve narrated it with video shot after the fact to give my insights and thoughts about what you might be able to learn from the footage.

Pino Palladino in rehearsal

I’ve been wanting to put this footage up here for you guys for a while, and just got round to starting to edit what I have from a James Jamerson Jr. rehearsal that Pino Palladino comes and sits in on one tune.

This is the song with Pino, and the band features James Gadson on drums, Phil Chen on guitar and many other great musicians! This video gives you a look at how prepared someone like Pino is when he steps into a situation like this. He had just arrived from the UK the day before, picked up whatever bass they had for him on the stage, and played the song perfectly each and every time they rehearsed it.

There’s so much cool footage like this in the vault that we’re working on for you guys, and I hope you enjoy this first of many completely exclusive (I was the only one in the room with a camera) and rare moments I’ve managed to capture.

Live at the Jamboree – Part 4

This is the title track from “The Space in Between” from our 2nd night at the jamboree in June of 2011. Check out the seriously symphonic comping of Tim Miller, I want to see some posts in the forum about this one, there’s a lot to be learnt from transcribing some of Tim’s chordal work. It can really enhance your vertical perception of harmony in a big way.

Live at the Jamboree – Part 1

So as some of you might have seen, in June of 2011 I took my band to Barcelona and streamed two nights (four sets) online and charged for tickets. The VIP level of online ticket included a free download of the shows, and we plan to cut a digital download DVD together this fall and sell it online. But for all the members of this site, you’re going to get access to the footage included in your membership! This is the first in a series of videos from the shows, and the song is “Four Brothers”. Enjoy!

Randy Brecker Performance 1

This video follows on from the “Learning Music for a Tour Video” with some clips of the performance a day after the learning video was shot. This is the Randy Brecker Band live in Wyoming and this clip has the end of Ada Rovatti’s arrangement of Over the Rainbow, into the first part of the old Brecker Brother’s calssic “Rocks”. See if you can spot the wonderful typo in the title pages!

Directing a band on a live show – Part 2

Here is part 2 of a series of songs to give you a look inside an industry showcase show in Los Angeles we did with VV Brown in 2010 for Capitol Records. I was the Musical Director as well as playing bass, and was responsible for the programming, hiring the band, directing the show, arranging the horns and generally developing the concept for her music live. We were in the early stages of developing the live show, and also had a live horn section for this gig. Questions in the forum on these videos are not just welcomed but encouraged!
